Astros Part Ways With Velazquez, Who Seeks Opportunities in Asia

The Houston Astros have released outfielder Nelson Velazquez, ending what turned into a short and unremarkable run with the organization. Velazquez, 27, will now pursue opportunities overseas in Asian professional leagues rather than continue his search for playing time in Major League Baseball.

A Trail Through Two Organizations. Velazquez entered the 2026 season in the St. Louis Cardinals' minor-league system before earning a contract selection in late May. That call-up represented a chance to make an impact at the big-league level, but he struggled to deliver. Over 34 games with St. Louis, he compiled a .722 on-base-plus-slugging mark—a number that fell short of the production needed to secure a regular role.

The Astros Connection. Houston picked up Velazquez at some point during the season, apparently hoping a change of scenery might unlock better results. That gamble didn't pan out, leading the team to cut ties rather than carry him on the roster heading into the offseason. For the Astros, it's a low-impact move; Velazquez was a depth piece at best.

New Chapter Ahead. Velazquez's decision to look toward Asia reflects the reality facing dozens of veteran players each offseason—opportunities stateside have dried up, but professional baseball in Japan, Korea, or other leagues can still offer meaningful work. Whether he finds success abroad remains to be seen, but for Houston, his departure simply clears roster space for other options.
