Blue Jays Shuffle Rotation, Place Mantiply on Waivers
The Blue Jays addressed roster needs Monday by activating right-hander Trey Yesavage from the injured list and cycling through several pitching changes. Yesavage, returning from a stint on the 15-day IL, is slated to start tonight's game as Toronto tries to stabilize its pitching staff down the stretch.
The moves explained. Along with Yesavage's activation, the Blue Jays recalled fellow right-hander Chad Dallas from Triple-A Buffalo to bolster depth. To make room, Toronto optioned right-hander Spencer Arrighetti back to the minor leagues and designated left-hander Joe Mantiply for assignment, essentially putting him on waivers and opening the door for him to be claimed by another organization or released.
Yesavage's return. The timing of Yesavage's activation suggests the Blue Jays view him as ready to contribute to the major league rotation. His first start since returning from injury carries weight, as Toronto hopes he can provide reliable innings in an area where depth has been tested throughout the season.
Mantiply's status. The designation for assignment represents a significant move for the left-hander, as it indicates Toronto no longer sees him as part of the solution. Mantiply will have an opportunity to find a home elsewhere if claimed during the waiver period, or he may be released outright.
Rotation dynamics. These moves reflect the constant balancing act bullpen and rotation management requires. The Blue Jays are clearly assessing which arms best fit their competitive needs as the season progresses, and Yesavage's immediate assignment to the rotation suggests they have faith in his availability and performance.
