Jake Woodford's Unusual 2024 Journey Positions Him for Postseason Role

Jake Woodford's 2024 season took an unconventional path, as the pitcher found himself suiting up for two different teams mid-year. A nomadic campaign that included stops in both Milwaukee and Tampa Bay has left Woodford with unique experience and perspective as the postseason approaches—he's seen two different organizations' systems, bullpen philosophies, and playoff aspirations from the inside.

Woodford's journey became possible through one of the offseason's more significant trades. The Brewers dealt right-hander Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets in exchange for prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, a move that reshaped both franchises' rotation plans. As part of the broader player movement that season, Woodford moved to Tampa Bay, where he joined a Rays team with its own playoff intentions.

What this means for postseason rosters. Teams value pitchers who have already experienced playoff baseball, and Woodford's dual-team experience in 2024 may prove valuable if either organization brings him along for October baseball. He understands the pressure cooker of competing down the stretch and has proven capable of adapting to different coaching staffs and strategies. His flexibility—having pitched for two contrasting organizations—could make him a useful late-inning option.

Peralta's new chapter. The trade that facilitated Woodford's movement also reshaped Peralta's career arc. Now with the Mets, the former Brewers ace will face his old team if both clubs advance in the playoffs, adding a personal storyline to any potential matchup. Woodford's unexpected journey through 2024 underscores how quickly pitcher availability and organizational depth can shift during a single season.
