Mariners Claim Toglia From Reds on Waivers

Adding depth at first. The Mariners claimed first baseman Michael Toglia off waivers from Cincinnati, acquiring the former Rockies prospect without surrendering prospects or cash. Toglia has been sidelined since early September with a shoulder dislocation, but Seattle apparently saw enough potential to take on both the salary and the rehabilitation timeline.

Toglia's path has been unconventional. Originally drafted and developed by Colorado, he caught on with Cincinnati on a minor league deal this past winter after the Rockies decided to move in a different direction. His injury occurred late in the season, leaving questions about his recovery timeline and when he might be ready for regular season action. The Mariners are banking that their medical staff can get him healthy and productive, or at minimum keep him in reserve depth.

What the claim means. For the Mariners, this is low-risk roster management—they're adding a young player at a position where depth is always valuable, and the financial commitment is manageable. At worst, Toglia recovers slowly and remains minor league depth. At best, he returns to the form that made him an interesting prospect in Colorado's system. The claim also signals that Seattle still sees room for depth improvements heading into spring training. How quickly Toglia's shoulder heals will determine whether he's part of opening day plans or a candidate for a trade if the Mariners find a more immediate fit elsewhere.
