REDBLACKS Add Depth to Defence with Kwamou and Smith Jr.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS have moved to strengthen their defence on two fronts, bringing in National linebacker Daniel Kwamou and American defensive back Lento Smith Jr. Both signings were announced Wednesday as the team looks to shore up depth ahead of the second half of the season.

Addressing depth needs. Linebacker is a crucial position in the CFL's defensive scheme, and adding a National option like Kwamou gives Ottawa flexibility in how it constructs its front seven. Similarly, secondary help through Smith Jr. provides more options in a passing league where depth at defensive back is constantly tested by injury and performance demands.

Mid-season roster moves. These signings reflect a common CFL pattern: teams reassess their rosters at the midpoint and make targeted additions to address weak spots or prepare for the stretch run. How quickly Kwamou and Smith Jr. integrate into Ottawa's system will determine whether these moves pay immediate dividends or simply add depth for potential future use.

Betting considerations. Roster additions of this nature typically don't move lines on their own—they're more about sustainability and depth. However, if either player steps into regular snaps quickly, it could marginally improve Ottawa's defensive efficiency metrics, potentially tightening totals in upcoming matchups if the defence becomes noticeably more cohesive.
