Royals Clear Pitching Depth After Failed Waiver Claims

The Royals have moved five pitchers off their 40-man roster, outrighting them to Triple-A Omaha after none drew interest on the waiver wire. The group includes Alex Lange, Mason Black, Connor Seabold, Alec Marsh, and Easton McGee—all right-handed hurlers who went unclaimed despite being offered to other organizations.

When a team outrights a player, it signals they no longer see a role for that pitcher in their major-league plans, at least in the near term. The fact that all five cleared without a claim suggests the market viewed them similarly: organizational depth with limited immediate upside. For the Royals, it's a roster housekeeping move ahead of the new season, creating space to add other talent or regroup their pitching depth.

The Free Agency Wrinkle. Two of the five—Seabold and McGee—have elected free agency rather than accept the minor-league assignment. This is their right under MLB rules, and it means Kansas City will not retain their rights even at the Triple-A level. Marsh and the others accepted the outright assignment and can remain in the organization's system.

What It Means. For Kansas City, this clears clutter from the 40-man roster while preserving the option to recall any of the assigned pitchers if injuries or unexpected performance swings force their hand mid-season. The Royals bullpen and rotation depth will need to be addressed through other means—free agency signings, trades, or internal development of younger arms.

From a betting perspective, roster moves like this typically have minimal daily impact unless they signal a dramatic shift in team composition. The Royals' win totals and playoff odds are set based on broader organizational strength, not mid-tier pitching depth. However, if this is part of a larger pattern of Kansas City cutting costs or youth-focused rebuilding, it could subtly influence long-term season projections.
