Slater Returns to Rays System on Minor League Pact

The Rays and outfielder Austin Slater have agreed to reunite on a minor league contract, giving the veteran another shot in Tampa Bay's player development system. Slater will report to Triple-A Durham as he seeks to work his way back to the majors.

At Triple-A, he'll face competition for outfield depth slots and need to demonstrate he can still produce at a level that warrants a major league look.

Organizational Depth. For the Rays, adding Slater on a minor league deal carries minimal risk—it gives them another proven veteran to evaluate without committing resources to a major league roster spot. If injuries strike the outfield or the team goes on a run and needs depth, Slater provides a fallback option.
