Stanton Returns as Yankees Designate Cornielle for Assignment

The New York Yankees activated superstar designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton from the 60-day injured list, adding him to their Wild Card roster for the upcoming matchup against the Boston Red Sox. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated right-hander Alexander Cornielle for assignment, concluding a brief stint for the young pitcher who had just reached the major leagues.

Stanton returns. Getting Stanton back in the lineup represents a significant boost to the Yankees' postseason roster. A healthy Stanton provides New York with a powerful right-handed bat capable of changing games in October, when every at-bat carries heightened importance. His presence on the Wild Card roster underscores the organization's belief that he can contribute meaningfully despite the time away from action.

Cornielle's short journey. The move ends Cornielle's time with the organization for now. The right-hander made his MLB debut in the second game of a doubleheader against the Orioles, a fleeting big-league appearance that came and went quickly. While designating a young pitcher to the minors might seem like a step backward, it's a necessary transaction in a sport where roster management often involves tough decisions about who gets the limited spots available.

Postseason implications. From a betting standpoint, Stanton's activation modifies the Yankees' offensive profile heading into the Wild Card round. His return to the lineup could influence run total projections, as the team now has an additional power bat in the order. Sportsbooks tracking postseason odds will likely adjust their assessment of New York's chances accordingly, particularly in a short series where one dominant bat can swing momentum. The activation also signals confidence from the organization about Stanton's health as the stakes rise.
